Thank you from the Irish Cancer Society
I would like to extend my warmest thanks to everyone who sponsored a prize or bought a raffle ticket at The Irish Pharmacy Awards on May 21st.
Together, you raised an amazing €9,245.00 for the Irish Cancer Society in memory of your colleague and friend Paolo Iacovelli of PharmaConex who sadly died of cancer last year and was passionate about the importance of cancer research.
Research means new discoveries and new therapies. Better odds and lives saved. More birthdays, hugs and precious moments together. It is the driving force behind improvements in cancer care and the hero of happy endings.
Thanks to the generosity of people like you, the Irish Cancer Society is proud to be the largest voluntary funder of cancer research in Ireland. This year we are supporting over 120 researchers in hospitals and academic institutions across the country. Every day, they make more progress in turning today’s terminal cancers into tomorrow’s treatable and survivable ones.
Just over 30 years ago, only three out of ten Irish people survived a cancer diagnosis. Today six out of ten do. Some cancers, like childhood blood cancers, that were previously almost always fatal are now largely curable. Nine out of ten people also now survive prostate, breast and testicular cancer.
Sadly the prognosis for other cancers is not yet as positive. But the pace of scientific and medical progress is so remarkable that a brighter future for everyone affected by cancer is within our grasp. With sufficient priority and investment, we can deliver a future where no one dies of cancer. Advances like the HPV vaccine mean it will be possible to eliminate some cancers. Others will become chronic, manageable illnesses, just as HIV is now.
Our mission at the Irish Cancer Society is to help bring that day forward. But it won’t happen without a lot more investment. We typically receive just 3% of our income from the State. So we are reliant on the compassion and generosity of our donors to fund all of our lifesaving research, as well as vital supports such as our free nursing, counselling and transport services.
Once again, I would like to express my gratitude for inviting me to attend The Irish Pharmacy Awards and for choosing the Irish Cancer Society as the benefiting charity of such a wonderful evening. Our work would not be possible without you.
If you ever have a question or concern about cancer, the experienced cancer nurses on our Support Line are at the end of the phone on 1800 200 700 or at supportline@irishcancer.ie.
Thank you once again for your generosity,
Averil Power
CEO, Irish Cancer Society
