Munster Technological University (MTU) invites prospective students to the MTU Spring Open Day on 29th March at MTU Kerry North Campus from 10 am – 1 pm to learn more about Ireland’s first BSc (Honours) in Digital Health & Informatics for Healthcare (MT815). This course commences in September 2025.
This event is a unique opportunity to meet expert lecturers, tour the state-of-the-art facilities, find out about the course and ask questions about entry requirements and student life at MTU Kerry Campus.
With healthcare rapidly evolving through digital technologies such as AI, wearable sensors, electronic health records, and telehealth, there is a growing demand for professionals who can bridge the gap between healthcare and IT. The most transformative digital health technology is the Electronic Health Record. Traditional paper-based health records are being phased out and replaced with comprehensive medical records in electronic form. MTU’s innovative level 8 programme will equip students with the skills to drive digital transformation in the health sector, opening doors to exciting careers in hospitals, tech companies, medical device firms, and healthcare organisations worldwide.
Healthcare Informatics combines health care and information technology. It determines how health data is captured, managed, analysed, collected, and most importantly secured. The programme aptly coincides with exciting developments at MTU Kerry Campus, including the opening of the new STEM building, cutting edge simulation labs in the Department of Nursing and Healthcare Sciences. It also includes the recent launch of the HSE Health App on the 25th February.
Tony McKeown, Chief Information Security Officer of Bon Secours Health System, welcomes the programme, stating “The introduction by MTU of the BSc in Digital Health and Informatics for Healthcare is timely in providing urgently required Clinical Business Analysts, Systems Integration Specialists and Programme Managers and with the necessary knowledge and skills to work with healthcare and IT professionals in the development and implementation of digital health technologies and healthcare information management systems. A myriad of opportunities will be available to graduates in the burgeoning electronic healthcare industry in Ireland and internationally.”
Industry collaboration is at the heart of this programme. Developed in consultation with health tech companies, the HSE, and Bon Secours Health System, the curriculum is designed to ensure graduates possess the in-demand skills needed for the evolving healthcare landscape. This collaborative process is important to future-proof MTU graduates, making sure they have the right skillset and are work ready. This approach is reflected in the structure of the programme; students spend three years on campus and the final year in paid work placement.
Ms. Fiona O’Flynn, Head of Department for International Medical Commencement at MTU, says “The programme is multidisciplinary. Students will study modules linking three pillars: bioscience, health science and data science with an interdisciplinary delivery approach to the programme. Students on the programme will take modules with students from related programmes across MTU Departments in the North Campus in Tralee Co Kerry. This interdisciplinary delivery approach reflects the multi-professional teams in medical technology development and healthcare settings.”
Graduates will have the skills to work in the digital health sector nationally and internationally. With over 200 digital health companies in Ireland, 35 of which are in the Southwest Region, and a booming global industry, graduates will have opportunities in Ireland, Canada, the USA, Australia, in both public and private sectors, including HSE, private hospital groups, pharma and medical technology companies. Graduates will be primarily a digital health scientist/health informatic specialist with knowledge of health sciences and medical biosciences to support the role. Examples of such roles include Digital Transformation Liaison Officer, Digital Transformation Research Assistant, Healthcare/Clinical Data Scientist and Digital Health Data Architect.
